 Alpha Phi Sigma:

Alpha Phi Sigma, the national honors
society for students in the criminal justice sciences.

Alpha Phi Sigma (APS) recognizes the academic excellence of
undergraduate, graduate and juris doctorate students, and is the only
criminal justice honors society recognized by the Association of College
Honor Societies.

Alpha Phi Sigma, the National Criminal Justice Honor Society, is currently in a rebuilding year for the Theta Beta chapter at Mason. We currently have 10 active members, but will be initiating more in November 2008. In conjunction with LAE, the ADJ Club at Mason, we sponsor various events throughout the academic year. In the past, we have sponsored a career panel, and participated in "CSI Nights", in which there were presentations from local police departments. Future events include a day trip to the Museum of Crime and Punishment in DC, and a charity softball tournament which we hope to hold in the spring semester.

There are several requirements to be in APS.

For Undergraduate Students:
1) Declared major/minor in Administration of Justice, or declared minor in Legal Studies
2) A minimum of 60 credits completed
3) A minimum of 12 credits completed at GMU
4) A minimum of 12 credits of criminal justice/legal studies coursework completed
5) A minimum 3.2 cumulative GPA (from all colleges attended)
6) A minimum 3.2 GPA in criminal justice/legal studies coursework

For Graduate Students:
1) Pursuing an M.A. or Ph.D. in Justice, Law, and Crime Police, or an MPA with a concentration in Administration of Justice
2) A minimum of 3 credits completed at GMU
3) A minimum of 3.4 GPA in graduate coursework

Our Mission:
The purposes of Alpha Phi Sigma shall be to promote critical thinking, rigorous scholarship and life long learning; to keep abreast of the advances in scientific research; to elevate the ethical standards of the criminal justice professions and to sustain in the public mind the benefit and necessity of education and professional training.

The goals of Alpha Phi Sigma shall be to honor and promote academic excellence; service; leadership and unity.
