Student Representatives to the Board of Visitors
Mason’s Board of Visitors (BOV) includes two students who serve a one-year, non-voting terms. The students are actively involved on the BOV committees and participate in all board activities and deliberations. University Life is actively involved in the selection process.
This year’s student reps are David Lieu and Gleason Rowe.
David Lieu
David Lieu is currently a master's student at George Mason University. After receiving dual degrees in both biology and chemistry with a biochemistry concentration from Mason, he is pursuing a Master's degree in environmental chemistry.
He was inducted into the Alpha Lambda Delta (ALD) National Honor Society where he was offered the position of Historian and then promoted to Vice President of Operations. Through ALD he was awarded the Jo Anne J. Trow Undergraduate Scholarship, Maria Leonard Senior Award and the Warner Moore Graduate fellowship. David has also served as the Vice President for the Golden Key International Honor Society, founder and President of the GMU Chemistry Club between 2006 and 2009, a member of the University's Honor Committee, and is a sitting member of the College of Sciences Student Advisory Council. He is also an active member of the American Chemical Society, Atlantic Estuarine Research Society, Alpha Epsilon Delta Pre-Medical Honor Society, and the Teo-Chew Association.
David is also a strong advocate of research, having worked in both biochemistry and environmental chemistry. He has won numerous awards for his research including being a two time recipient of the GMU Center for Teaching Excellence Apprenticeship along with the Award for Originality and Creativity, the Award for Best Research Project, and the Student's Choice Award at Innovations 2007 and 2008. David's research in environmental chemistry has also lead to an Honorable Mention from the nationally accredited Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship, as well as many other undergraduate research grants.
Other honors David has been awarded over the years include the GMU Vision Award for Academic Excellence in 2006, the National Dean's List in 2007, and the American Chemical Society's Senior Award from the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry along with the Dean's Outstanding Senior Scholarship from the Department of Molecular and Microbiology in 2008. In 2009 David has also received the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry Leadership Award and was named the Mason Alumni Association's Senior of the Year. David is currently participating in the Student Career Experience Program with the Environmental Protection Agency's Department of Pesticide Program's Environmental Fates and Effects Division.
Gleason S. Rowe
Gleason Rowe is one of two student representatives on George Mason University’s Board of Visitors for the 2009-2010 academic year. He is currently a junior double majoring in Global Affairs and Spanish with a concentration in Global Governance. Beyond his studies, Gleason has been an active member of the Mason community and has participated in a variety of activities.
While at the university, Gleason’s focus has been to help build Patriot Pride in the overall Mason community. Since the fall of his freshman year he has been a member of Mason Ambassadors through the Admissions Office serving as President, concurrently with his position on the Board of Visitors.
Gleason has also been a valued member of the Orientation and Family Programs and Services team as a Patriot Leader, and has excelled through the levels of the office’s multi-tiered leadership program. In his tenure in the office he has been responsible for the creation and implementation of programming and services to enhance the experience of Mason students and their families.
Furthermore, Gleason was also the co-founder of Students Helping Honduras at George Mason. As part of his role he, along with other Mason students, traveled to Honduras to participate in their student volunteer program helping to construct buildings and assisting in a local hospital and orphanage. His other involvement includes LEADScholars, Lambda Sigma National Sophomore Honor Society and Patriot Platoon.
Upon graduating from George Mason University, Gleason plans to attend graduate school to study international relations or public policy. Wherever Gleason’s ambitions take him, he will always remain first and foremost a George Mason Patriot.
