Are You Career Ready?

Students in professional dress

It’s official; summer is over. Falling leaves and crisp nights have replaced rising mercury and poolside picnics. But as childhood hero and wise wordsmith Dr. Seuss reminds us: “Don’t cry because it’s over, smile because it happened.”

We at University Life are doing our best to make sure your fall is as productive as your summer was blissful. Our full menu of student services, trainings, workshops, and events can help you successfully navigate the college experience and make your time at Mason the best it can be.

Even though we are only a month into the semester, it’s never too early to start laying the groundwork for a successful future. A 2014 Gallup-Purdue University study found that taking advantage of support resources and internship experiences in college had a direct impact on long-term success outcomes for graduates. So make an investment in yourself by attending the fall Career Fair that is taking place October 7th and 8th in Dewberry Hall on the Fairfax campus.

Unsure where to start? Never been to a Career Fair? Not sure how your resume measures up? University Career Services is here to help you every step of the way with free resources that can help you jump-start your journey to true career readiness.

Here are six steps you can take to make the most of your Career Fair experience:

  1. Download the Mounza Career App to view employers attending the fair and find the career fair map
  2. Attend Resume Clinic on October 5th or October 6th
  3. Attend the Prepare for the Fair Workshop on October 5th
  4. Utilize the NEW Prepare for the Fair online interactive module
  5. Research employers and visit the Career Fair Preparation website for more resources
  6. Dress professionally when attending both days of the Career Fair on October 7th and 8th

Don’t take our word for it.

Listen to what other Mason students have said about the value of attending the Career Fair:

“I met with an employer at the fair, had a video interview the week after, and was made an offer on the spot! I will be joining them after graduation in DC.”

“I had an on the spot interview with the Therapeutic Alliance, LLC and I was called in for a formal interview and landed an internship! They are offering me training and it may lead to a full time job!”

“At the career fair I received a lot of information about what kind of jobs are out there and it helped me see that I can actually qualify for theses great jobs even before I graduate. A lot of times we limit ourselves saying things like “if I don’t have a degree, I won’t even be considered” and just like that we miss out on great jobs and internships that could provide us with the great skills we need or even the great experiences we want.”
