Accounting major Jessica Harker says she gained a real-world perspective she couldn’t have earned in a classroom when she shadowed an accountant at the public accounting firm of Halt, Buzas and Powell for a day.
And it’s just that kind of experiential learning that George Mason University’s Career Services’ first Take a Patriot to Work Day gave to almost 100 undergraduate and graduate students on Nov. 7. Students went behind the scenes for several hours at three dozen federal and global employers in the Washington, D.C., region, including the State Department, Lockheed Martin, Freddie Mac, Hyatt and Marriott hotels, the Washington Post, USA Today and Gannett Digital, as well as other key local businesses and nonprofits.
Harker, a junior from Spotsylvania, Va., went on a tour of the Alexandria-based business to meet employees and managers. An audit manager involved in recruiting reviewed her resume, gave her advice and answered some informational questions. The experience solidified Harker’s career aspiration of joining a public accounting firm that works closely with nonprofits.
