Mason Nation Gathers to Mourn Those Slain in Chapel Hill

A crowd of George Mason University students and others stood quiet around the George Mason statue on Friday, listening to passages from the Qur’an and the reactions of others to the shooting deaths of three students in Chapel Hill, N.C.

The vigil was held for 21-year-old Yusor Mohammad Abu-Salha; her husband, Deah Shaddy Barakat, 23; and her sister, Razan Mohammad Abu-Salha, 19, who died Tuesday at a condominium complex not far from the University of North Carolina.

The vigil was organized by George Mason’s Muslim Student Alliance organizations along with in the Mason Office of Diversity, Inclusion and Multicultural Education.
