Mason Nation Observes MLK Jr. Day of Service

Classes are not in session; offices are closed in observance of Martin Luther King Jr., Day, but many members of the George Mason University community consider Jan. 19, 2015, “a day on, not a day off”—commemorating the birthday of the civil rights legend with a Day of Service.

Mason students, faculty and staff can sign up to volunteer at Women Giving Back, Facets, Northern Virginia Family Services and Carpenter’s Shelter and Virginia Student Power Network.

Mason volunteers also plan to join the education nonprofit City Year; U.S. Secretary of Education Arnie Duncan; Washington, D.C., Mayor Muriel Bowser and Chief of Schools John Davis, for a Day of Service in the nation’s capital.
