Information Technology Services’ IT Security Office is warning Mason students about possible employment scams that continue to target college students across the U.S.
According to the Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3), scammers advertise phony job opportunities on college employment websites and/or email students directly to recruit them for fictitious positions. When students accept the ‘job,’ they are sent counterfeit checks to deposit into their personal checking accounts. Students are then directed to withdraw a portion of the funds to send to a “vendor” for job supplies. The funds are withdrawn before the bank can confirm the checks are fraudulent resulting in financial loss for students.
