The Black Male Initiative (BMI) seeks to comply with the four competency areas that University Life has outlined as part of the student success model.
1. The committee is represented by several faculty/staff members across the university (Departments/Offices: African and African American Students, University Life, Mason Recreation, Early Identification Program, College of Education, Communications Department, Compliance, Diversity & Ethics, INTO) each meeting has student representation in order to foster relationships and create collaboration.
2. We conducted an informal survey using Google to inquire about student interest

The aim and scope of BMI is to provide support to the Black male population, ensuring (1) timely and successful degree completion, (2 )leadership development, and (3) social responsibility/community engagement. We are looking for your input on how we send our time and resources this semester.
3. The BMI hosted a Black Male Summit on April 30, 2016 for students at Mason. The event was well attended by students. Each break out sessions was co-facilitated by Mason faculty and staff.
4. For the second year the BMI group attended a Black male conference at the University of Virginia in the Spring.
