GEORGE MASON UNIVERSITY
DIALOGUE ACROSS DIFFERENCES INITIATIVE
Why Dialogue Across Differences?
A collaboration between George Mason's Schools and Colleges, Academic Affairs, and the Division of University Life, the Dialogue Across Differences (DxD) initiative creates space for George Mason students, administrative and academic units, faculty and staff, and community organizations to promote resources and engage in events, and ongoing programs.
In times of social division and political polarization, seeking opportunities for Dialogue Across Differences is essential for bridging divides and building connections. This approach encourages seeing others' perspectives and sharing our own constructively. Dialogue can take various forms, such as debate on contentious issues that create resentments between groups. These discussions help explain the importance of political and socio-economic beliefs and explore ways to achieve just and peaceful societies.
For those interested in deeper engagement, different dialogue opportunities can be pursued to foster harmonious relations. Programs like the Carter School’s Dialogue & Difference Project facilitate meaningful conversations about differences and commonalities.
Additionally, addressing divisive challenges through a transformation perspective requires long-term engagement, focusing on inter-group and internal conflicts. Conflict transformation involves tackling root causes and developing collective peace-building strategies.
By embracing these approaches, we can work towards understanding and resolving the issues that divide us, ultimately fostering a more inclusive and peaceful society.
