Mason Patriots!
This is one of the most exciting times of the year at George Mason as we welcome you and all new and returning students, staff, and faculty to campus. I am so glad you are with us! We are the largest, most diverse university in the Commonwealth. There are endless learning and community-building opportunities for you to experience that reflect the university’s “All Together Different” motto.
In the rush of the beginning of the semester, here are a few highlights and reminders:
Activities: So many Welcome2Mason events and activities are underway and many more are ahead. Find what interests you – whether you are an undergraduate or graduate student or a new, returning, or transfer student. The diversity of students, activities, and support services are available to you – take the next step and dive in!
Student and Campus Organizations: Remember that you can put your values and interests into action by participating in any of our several hundred student and campus organizations featured on Mason 360. If you are on campus Wednesday, September 4, between 11-2, come out to the Get Connected Fair on Wilkins Plaza to learn about the many campus organizations you can join. Students from all across campus are looking to connect with others, and our many organizations are ready to welcome you!
Civic Engagement/Voting: National, statewide, and local elections are coming up on Tuesday, November 5. George Mason students are known for high voter turnout. Your voice matters, so make it count! There will be a lot of information and many events over the next two months to encourage your civic engagement. Upcoming events will be listed at MasonVotes, including the first presidential debate on September 10, which you can watch with friends and hallmates in the Johnson Center Atrium.
If you are a residential student, you can register to vote at our polling location on campus. Again, all the information you need is located at MasonVotes, including voter registration, how to vote early or absentee, and additional registration information.
Updated First Amendment policies: President Washington recently messaged the George Mason community with updated information on revised policies related to First Amendment exercises due to new guidance from the Commonwealth’s Attorney General. In the next week, look for an email from Dr. Sharnnia Artis, Vice President for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, who will send out further information and clarification on these important policies.
Dialogue Across Differences (DxD) Initiative: Throughout the year, you will find many opportunities to engage in events focused on what we are calling the George Mason Dialogue Across Differences (DxD) initiative. The semester schedule of events will continue to grow and is available on Mason 360.  Review the list and look for events that both speak to you and those that might challenge you in new ways. By sponsoring  DxD programming, we are encouraging the George Mason community to come together meaningfully to gain important knowledge and skills in constructive dialogue, debate, freedom of speech, civic engagement, and compassionate listening.
Visit ulife.gmu.edu: The University Life website is a great place to start when you have questions about navigating campus life. Get acquainted with the many services and resources available and the countless ways you can get involved at George Mason.
Take care of yourself: Please invest the time to care for your mind and body and strengthen your ability to manage stress. Remember that resources to support your mental and physical health are yours for the taking. In particular, the university provides you with access to TimelyCare and Burnalong,  two free 24/7 services to help you manage your mental health and well-being.  I hope you will take the time to check out and use these valuable resources.
Patriots, the year will go by quickly. As you find your communities, pursue your purpose, and enjoy the moments ahead, remember that you are not alone. We are here for you, and we will support you (and your successes) every step of the way!
With Patriot Pride,
Rose Pascarell
Vice President for University Life
